Local Google Ads: 1,100+ calls and 2,400+ routes to one location

We ran a hyper-local Google Ads campaign for an automotive business that needs customers to come to a physical location. It generated 1,100+ phone calls and 2,400+ routes requested to the location.

The client and the goal

The client is an automotive business with a physical location. We keep the brand anonymous. Not every company works online. Many businesses need traffic at their own premises, and this was one of them.

The client wanted more phone calls and more real visits to its location, through a Google Ads campaign.

The challenge

How do you direct customers to a physical location, and not just to a website? For a local business, a click is only useful if it leads to a call or a visit.

That set the shape of the campaign. Every part of it had to push people towards a phone call or a trip to the location.

What we did

We used a hyper-local strategy in Google Ads. It had four parts.

  1. Targeting only people near the location

We showed the ads only to users close to the location, so that no budget was spent on people outside the region.

  2. A Call now button in mobile ads

We added a Call now call to action to the ads shown on mobile, which made contact as simple as possible.

  3. Google Maps ads

We used Google Maps ads to increase the number of routes requested to the location.

  4. A/B tests of ad headlines

We tested different headlines to see which messages best encouraged people to interact with the ads.

Results

1,100+

phone calls from the ads

2,400+

routes requested to the location

What the results mean

Both headline figures count actions that lead offline, not visits to a website: phone calls placed from the ads, and routes requested to the location.

Phone calls. More than 1,100 customers called directly from the ads.

Routes. More than 2,400 routes were requested to the location. This points to more people visiting in person.

Budget. Budget went to actions of real value, with click costs optimised.
